Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. She did not explore acting as a profession until she reached adulthood, as her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry starred in nine episodes in 2016 of the ABC drama The Family. Her father played her character in the ABC drama Scandal. That same year she played a young character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
